India’s textile and apparel exports recorded strong growth in October 2021, supported by higher shipments across major textile and allied product categories.

According to preliminary merchandise trade data from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, all major textile and apparel groups recorded positive growth compared with October 2020.

Cotton yarn, fabrics and made-ups recorded the highest growth at 46.2%. Exports of man-made yarn, fabrics and made-ups increased 29.12%, while jute products, including floor coverings, grew 27.44%.

Readymade garments of all textiles recorded growth of 6.42%. Carpet exports increased 10.06%, while handicrafts excluding handmade carpets grew 9.72%. Leather and leather products also recorded a 15.64% rise.

India’s overall merchandise exports reached $35.65 billion in October 2021, compared with $24.92 billion in October 2020. This represented a growth of 43.05% in dollar terms.

For April-October 2021, India’s cumulative exports reached $233.54 billion, compared with $150.54 billion during the same period in 2020. This marked a 55.13% increase in dollar terms.

The strong performance reflected broader growth across India’s export sectors. The government also viewed the trend as a sign of continued economic recovery.

Then Commerce and Industry and Textiles Minister Piyush Goyal said strong export growth indicated a sustained economic rebound. He also highlighted the role of quality goods and services exports in supporting the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision.

The October data highlighted the growing contribution of the textile and apparel sector to India’s overall export performance.
