India and the United States are set to advance discussions on their proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) during Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal’s visit to the US.
Goyal is visiting the US from September 29 to October 5. He will attend the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on September 30 and October 1 at the invitation of US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
The two countries are working to finalise an interim trade deal based on the joint statement issued on February 7, 2026. The wider BTA aims to expand market access and strengthen bilateral trade ties.
India is seeking preferential market access for its exporters. Discussions are expected to focus on tariff arrangements and a framework that can provide greater access to both markets.
Goyal will also hold bilateral meetings and engage with American businesses in sectors including manufacturing, consumer goods, agribusiness, retail and technology. The discussions will highlight opportunities for Indian farmers, fishermen, women entrepreneurs, startups, MSMEs and other businesses.
The talks come after earlier rounds of negotiations between Goyal and Greer. In June, the two sides reviewed key areas including market access, digital trade, supply-chain resilience and non-tariff barriers.
The latest engagements are expected to support further work on the interim agreement and the broader India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement.
