India-US Ties to Strengthen Further, Says Piyush Goyal

India’s relationship with the United States remains strong and is expected to grow further, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Wednesday. Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi, he stressed that bilateral ties are supported by economic, political and security interests.

Goyal said cooperation between the two countries extends beyond trade to defence, technology, critical minerals and people-to-people exchanges. He also described the relationship as safe, adding that closer India-US ties need not harm relations with other countries.

India-US Trade Deal Talks Continue

The remarks come amid uncertainty over the proposed India-US trade agreement and concerns about potential US tariffs. However, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said the negotiations were at an advanced stage, with both sides working to resolve outstanding issues.

Goyal also described the US as India’s largest trading partner and expressed confidence that it would retain this position in the coming years.

India Open to Fair Trade with China

Goyal also said India was open to rebuilding relations with China, provided the engagement remained fair and stable. His comments come as both countries work towards improving ties following earlier border tensions.

India has introduced measures to regulate certain Chinese investments and strengthen domestic participation in key industries. Recent policy changes have also opened a faster approval route for selected investments involving Chinese companies, subject to specified conditions and Indian majority ownership.

Focus on Balanced Economic Partnerships

India’s approach highlights the importance of stable international partnerships, fair market access and resilient supply chains. While trade negotiations with the US continue, India is also seeking a balanced economic relationship with China.

The outcome of these discussions could influence investment, manufacturing, technology cooperation and India’s broader position in global trade.
