India is targeting $1 trillion in exports in the current financial year, despite a challenging global trade outlook. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced the goal, highlighting India's ambition to expand its global market presence and strengthen economic growth.
India recorded $863 billion in exports in FY2026. Reaching the new target will require growth of nearly 16%. Meanwhile, global trade is expected to expand by just 2.5% to 3%, adding pressure on exporters.
Speaking at the curtain raiser for the 31st CII Partnership Summit in New Delhi, Goyal expressed confidence in India's export potential. He highlighted the contribution of businesses, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), large industries and startups.
Free Trade Agreements to Boost Exports
India is looking to convert its growing network of free trade agreements (FTAs) into stronger export opportunities. Goyal urged the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to establish FTA utilisation desks across its state councils.
These desks would help MSMEs understand trade agreements, rules of origin and opportunities in international markets. The initiative aims to improve awareness and help businesses access the benefits of India's trade partnerships.
Key export opportunities include engineering goods, electronics, precision products, agricultural goods and marine products. The agreements are also expected to encourage foreign investment and support domestic manufacturing.
Technology and Innovation to Support Growth
Goyal said technology would play a central role in India's long-term economic expansion. Greater adoption of emerging technologies could improve productivity, strengthen competitiveness and create new opportunities for skilled workers.
He also highlighted India's reliability as a global business partner. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Indian companies continued meeting international commitments in merchandise and services, reinforcing the country's position in global supply chains.
The government is also focusing on ease of doing business, labour reforms and sustainability to support industrial growth. These efforts aim to make Indian businesses more competitive in international markets.
CII Partnership Summit to Strengthen Global Ties
The 31st CII Partnership Summit is scheduled to take place in Visakhapatnam on November 12–13, 2026. The event will bring together international businesses and policymakers to explore investment and trade opportunities.
Goyal highlighted five key themes: technology, trust, trade, talent and tradition. He said these priorities would help strengthen international partnerships and support India's economic ambitions.
India is also working towards becoming a $30 trillion economy by 2047, according to the minister's long-term outlook. Achieving the $1 trillion export target will depend on stronger global demand, wider market access and greater participation from Indian businesses.
As global trade faces uncertainty, India is seeking to expand exports through trade agreements, technology and deeper international cooperation.
